Your Business Makes Money, So Why Do You Still Feel Broke?

Strong Sales, Empty Wallet

Your business had a good month.

Sales came in. Deals closed. Customers paid. Your bank account looked strong for a few days.

Then the money disappeared.

You paid your team, vendors, software, debt, taxes, marketing, and other bills. You put the rest back into the business. Now you are waiting for the next sale just to do it all again.

If this sounds familiar, you may have asked yourself a painful question:

“Why does my business make money, but I still feel broke?”

The answer may not be that you need more revenue. The real problem may be what happens to the money after it enters your business.

Reinvesting Everything Is Not a Financial Plan

Many business owners are proud to say, “I reinvest everything back into the business.”

That sounds smart. It sounds like a person who is focused on growth.

But if every dollar goes back into the company, when do you get paid? When do you build savings? When does all your hard work begin creating personal freedom?

Reinvesting can be good when it is done with a plan. The problem comes when “reinvesting” means spending whatever is available and hoping the business becomes profitable later.

Hope is not a financial system.

You need to know how much the business can afford to spend. You also need to know how much should go toward profit, taxes, owner pay, and cash reserves.

Without those numbers, you are not choosing how much to reinvest. The business is simply consuming every dollar you give it.

The Three Numbers Every Owner Should Know

There are three basic questions that can tell you a great deal about the health of your business:

  1. How much did you make?

  2. How much did you spend?

  3. How much did you keep?

Imagine your company made $1 million last year.

That number may sound impressive. But it does not tell you whether the business was healthy.

What if you spent $750,000? You had $250,000 left before taxes and other needs.

What if you spent $950,000? Now very little remains.

What if you spent $1.1 million? Your million-dollar business actually lost $100,000.

Revenue may make a business look successful. What you keep determines whether that success is real.

Do you know those three numbers for your business right now?

Run Your Business by Percentages

Profit First helps business owners manage money by percentage.

Instead of treating the money in your bank account as one large pile, you give each part a job. A percentage goes toward operating expenses. Other percentages go toward owner pay, taxes, profit, and reserves.

The right percentages will be different for each business.

A company with a large team and high material costs may need more for operations. A small consulting company may need less. A real estate investor may need separate accounts for property costs, repairs, taxes, and future deals.

The goal is not to copy another owner’s percentages. The goal is to know where you are now and create a path toward healthier numbers.

Start Where You Are

What if your business is not profitable right now?

You may be spending 105% or 110% of what you make. You may be using credit cards, loans, or money from new projects to cover old bills.

It can feel like there is no room to start paying yourself.

Start small.

If the business is spending 110% of its income, your first goal may be to bring spending below 100%. Perhaps you cut it to 99% and place 1% into an owner pay or profit account.

One percent may not change your life today. But it begins changing your habits.

You stop accepting the idea that the business should receive everything while you receive whatever is left.

Once you reach 99% for the business and 1% for yourself, the next goal might be 95% and 5%. Later, it may become 90% and 10%.

These are only examples. Your actual targets should be based on your numbers and the needs of your company.

The key is steady progress.

Build the Habits of a Wealthy Owner

A wealthy business owner does not just focus on bringing in more money. They also know how to control and keep it.

That means reviewing expenses. Which costs help you make money? Which save time or make the company run better? Which are still being paid even though no one uses them?

It also means looking closely at new investments.

Before adding another employee, piece of equipment, software tool, or marketing campaign, ask:

  • What result should this expense produce?

  • How will we measure that result?

  • When should we expect a return?

  • Can we afford it without taking money from taxes, reserves, or owner pay?

These questions do not prevent growth. They help you grow on purpose.

More Sales May Not Solve the Problem

When cash runs low, the first reaction is often, “We need more sales.”

More sales can help. But only if you know what will happen to the new money.

If you make another $50,000 and spend all of it, your revenue grows—but your financial stress remains.

The same thing can happen with real estate deals. An investor closes another deal because cash is tight. The profit from that deal goes toward old bills and unfinished projects. Now another deal is needed to cover the next round of costs.

The owner becomes busier, but not wealthier.

A better question is not simply, “How can we make more?”

It is, “How much of the next dollar will we keep?”

Create a Roadmap Toward Freedom

Your current percentages are only your starting point.

Once you know what you make, spend, and keep, you can create targets for the next month, quarter, and year. You can find expenses to reduce, improve your pricing, make smarter investments, and direct more cash toward profit and owner pay.

Small changes can produce large results over time.

A business spending 90% of its income has a very different future from one spending 110%. A business that pays its owner on purpose feels very different from one that pays the owner only when money happens to be left.

Your business should support your life. You should not have to sacrifice your financial future just to keep the company alive.

What Could Your Business Be Keeping?

There may already be enough money moving through your business to create more profit and personal freedom.

The problem may be that no one has shown you where the money is going, which expenses are draining it, or what percentages would create a healthier company.
